                                                   Life as We Knew It

            And important event in the book Life as We Knew It was when the asteroid hit the moon and moved it. It was the turning point on the characters life because nothing will ever be the same. The electricity began to go out. The most they have electricity for is at least an hour maybe less. Going to school was hard for Miranda and Jon because there weren’t that many kids there and there wasn’t enough food. The school also had problems with the electricity so it was hard for the teachers and students to see and to cool down with AC because it was really hot outside.

            Since the moon shifted Miranda’s mom told her “It’s not just one volcano. A half dozen erupted yesterday alone. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Wind currents will affect things and no one can predict the wind” (page 1230). In this statement she is explaining to Miranda that since the moon shifted it has affect on the weather and shes just telling her and to the boys to be ready for the worst just in case.

            Another example on what Miranda has learned is that if she’s really hungry she has to wait till it’s time to eat because there isn’t a lot of food for all three of them for three meals a day. They need to save as much as they can to help them survive. But she doesn’t listen and decides to go to the pantry to try and find something that she can eat. She finds chocolate chips that she took when they were getting food and ate them. Her mother walked in and yelled “I was saving those chocolate chips for Matt’s birthday!”(page 194). She told Miranda “That was your

supper for today and tomorrow. You can join us on Thursday.” (page 194). This makes Miranda that if you do something that your mom told you not to you will be punished. She learns that it’s not just her that is suffering of hunger but everyone around her is too.

            Miranda realizes that they have to get ready for what’s coming and be tough about it. At the beginning she used to have fights with her mother about little things and now since there in a dangerous situation she has to help pitch in and help the others. She realizes that fighting with her mom won’t solve anything that is going on right now in their lives.
